Method and System for Maintaining Lighted Orientation of Steering Wheel To Assist Steering Guidance

Disclosed is a method and system for providing a steering wheel with lights installed on it and using a lighting controller for controlling the operation of the lights on the steering

wheel. Further, the lights on the steering wheel are used to communicate steering guidance to a driver of a vehicle. The lighting controller is used to operate each of the lights on the steering wheel. In an instance, the steering wheel communicates a right turn to driver of the vehicle by turning on one or more of the lights sequentially from left to right to communicate a steering guidance to turn the wheel clockwise.

In one embodiment, a feedback mechanism is provided to the lighting controller as shown in the figure below. The disclosed approach uses a 360 degree sensor that is mounted directly to the steering wheel shaft and provides an output of 0-359 degrees.

A shaft encoder and appropriate electronics can be used to provide a convenient digital

signal to the lighting controller. Indexing of each light in the steering wheel can be performed during assembly of the steering wheel onto the shaft, or during attachment of the encoder onto the shaft. This will provide a fixed point of reference for the lighting controller, which is required when orienting the topmost light on the steering wheel. For example, the lighting controller knows that when the encoder reads 0 degrees, then l...
