A system and apparatus for transmitting sensitive data in virtual mediums

When a user's circle of contacts within a social network becomes large, some issues arise. Sometimes it is not suitable to broadcast a message or information to the whole circle. Although some social networking sites allow users to direct messages to

different circles of contacts, the decision is a binary choice to share the entire communication with the group of contacts or to isolate others from the communication.

This system and apparatus specifically and transparently targets unique messages to certain audience members in a social network, while maintaining the one to many

communication channel that is such a strong point of social media. The process begins

with the user sending a general status update or other posting to a social media website. However, while entering a message into the site, the user is offered the opportunity to modify the message for particular users on the site. The modification of the message allows private information to be attached and presented to the chosen users via the use oftokens, either visible or hidden, appended to the message.

A breakdown of this system follows:

1. User writes a message to a social media website

2. Tokens are generated to encode private information

3. The message is sent, along with the either hidden or visible tokens

4. The web server interprets tokens for authorized/appropriate readers

In this way, readers who are not selected for the additional private information receive the original literal content. At the same time, contacts that were selected are given full disclosure to the original and hidden message's content.

Such a system enables the following benefits:

• Enable user to convey interesting data to readers of the message, but retain privacy and key information to only those to whom it is relevant

• Enhance the user experience of social networking service

The whole process involves three phases.

1. Edit message and generate tokens for specific information. When the user edits the message, some privacy information could be encoded. All users have

private dictionaries documenting the rules of how to transform messages authored by the user.

2. Authorize a small group of readers and post message to all. User selects a

small group of readers who can see the encoded message. After the user posts

the message, only lines of the dictionary that are referred by the message are available to selected readers. To normal readers, the encoded message is transparent. Users have no idea about the existence of the hidden message. To the readers authorized to read the encoded message, access is granted for them to read the author's token dictionary.

3. Interpret tokens for authorized readers. After the identification of the authorized

reader is verified, the encoded message is decoded by referring to dictionary.
