Disclosed is a virtual award based vending machine that allows a user to use a badge, Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile device, or any other identifier to access the machine and select from awarded merchandise. Vending Machine Based on Virtual Award Currency

One problem in the workplace is that of employee demotivation due to a lag between task execution and corresponding rewards. Current reward mechanisms rely on end of year bonuses, outings, or other events that do not directly motivate the employee due to a disconnection between the completion of the task and the receiving of the reward.

The novel solution is to present awards for tasks in a game-like scenario (i.e. gamify tasks) wherein the employee receives instant gratification for the completion of everyday functions in the workplace. Such instant gratification mechanisms have been successful in keeping online game players engaged and excited to continue playing; the core idea is that the same concept works to motivate people in the workplace.

The system includes a virtual award based vending machine that allows a user to use a badge, Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile device, or any other identifier to obtain merchandise from the vending machine. The vending machine connects through the network to a server that tracks the members of that company or group and the awards or virtual currency each user has received.
