Visual augmentation of a voice or video phone call based on the call context

While talking or listening on a voice/video based (VOIP - Voice over IP) phone call it would be very helpful to have a visualization of discussion points in front of us. This helps us to explain or understand the call in a better way. The following example explains the requirement in a better way. A user is talking with a friend they have not seen recently about his wife, children, house, car, etc. It would be helpful if the friend could see recent images of user's wife, children, house, car, etc. as the item is being discussed. Another example is a user is talking (over phone) to his friend about his last trip in Switzerland. He is talking about different places to visit, available foods, how to travel to different places etc. So, while speaking user wants to visualize some information in front of him so that he can explain in a better ways, at the same time, the receiving party is also wants to visualize the information, this will help him to understand the phone call in a better way.

This invention proposes a method and system using a smart mobile device, the context of phone call is analyzed for the words and context being used, and the callers will see a display of people/items that match to help them understand the conversation better:


1. If device is a head mounted display, the device is paired with the phone device prior to use (note that head mounted displays are becoming more mainstream with more elegant devices such as head mounted glass (see http://truthdeficit.com/google-glasses/ or http://www.google.com/glass/start/what-it-does/)


2. When a call is received, the content is monitored for wording/context.


3. When a matching person/item/location is mentioned, the appropriate image is shown to one or both parties on the call to help visualize what is being discussed.


4. The visual augmentation can be used on purely a voice call, or also with a video call where a user is currently using a video display device already (with the images being used in addition to the real time video). Note that having the images are helpful even on video calls since many of the people/items being discussed are not in camera view.

Following are the implementation steps:

Before initiating the call, a user can link pictures to words (for example "my wife" would link to his choice of pictures that best show his wife, "my car" would link to pictures of his car, "Andrew" would map to a picture of his son Andrew, etc. This would enable personalized and selectable images to be used for personal images (in addition to generalized pictures, such as "Ferrari" or "Switzerland", etc.) This would improve accuracy, and would allow users to pick representative/flattering images as the preferred pictures.
