Abstract

A method and system is disclosed to help consumers in assessing and managing online risk. For a given consumer, the method and system allows the consumer to evaluate absolute and relative risk of a) vicious spam, b) phishing attacks, and c) being compromised, and how it compares to the general population. Furthermore, the method and system helps the consumer understand factors contributing to the online risk and how to manage the factors.

Method and System for Managing Online Risk of Consumers

Description

Disclosed is a method and system to help consumers in assessing and managing online risk.

In an implementation, the method and system measures and displays absolute and relative risk of consumers being victims of spam, malicious attacks or phishing.  The method and system measures an absolute risk based on a number of inbound spam emails detected by one or more spam filters as follows:

  • Number of Inbound Spam Messages:

Most consumers are unaware of spam filters that block malicious mails.  The method and system displays a number of spam emails that were blocked during a period such as last week or month to provide the consumers an idea of the absolute risk.

Further, the method and system evaluates the relative risk of the consumers based on the following measures:

  • Percentile Risk:

Considering the credit industry as any indication, most consumers can have a better understanding and appreciation of risk when it is contrasted to others.  For example, knowing that a person is in the riskiest 5% of the population is more salient than knowing that the person has received 20 spam email messages.  Since email/internet providers have information about the entire set of consumers, the email/internet providers can easily compute relative risk.  In this case, the method and system displays a message to the consumers indicating that the risk (or number of spam emails) is, for example, in top x% of the population.  Additionally, a consumer's risk can also...
