Abstract

The article aim is to depict the solution of a software installation wizard GUI with background colors controlled by the installation status. In this solution the installation wizard user interface changes windows background color dynamically depending on the current installation stage status as soon as the installation process has determined status code. The color of the window background will be parameterized by install wizard prerequisites status and/or installation results status, according to commonly used GYR (Green, Yellow, Red) coloring scheme.

Software Installation Wizard UI with background colors controlled by the installation status

Regular software products installation processes are usually implemented as installation wizard user interfaces. Installation wizard dialog windows provide step by step installation and/or configuration activities with review and/or adjustment of installation prerequisites as well as installation results. All known installation wizards user interfaces display installation status details in a text form, and they do not reflect installation status in graphical layer (e.g. color).

In our opinion this is a major feature which is missed in such regular installation wizard solutions. Our solution extends currently known installation wizards, providing user interface windows with dynamically controlled background color. From what we have been able to gather so far, neither IBM nor any of IBM's competitors has provided any similar installation wizard solution providing such a UI feature.

In our solution, depending on current installation status at the major stages, windows background color immediately reflects actual status of:

A. Installation prerequisites

B. Installation results

The installation status codes are assigned to selected colors according to commonly used intuitive color coding practices:

Green - status = "Ok"

Yellow - status = "Warning", attention is required

Red - status = "Error", immediate action is required

More details on colors selection for installation status codes can be found in Chapter 2 of this disclosure. In our solution the installation wizard user interface changes windows background color dynamically depending on the current installation stage status as soon as the installation process has determined status code. The color of the window background will be parameterized by install wizard prerequisites status and/or installation results status, accordingly:
