Currently, a user can reserve a parking space either via smart phone, Internet, or upon arrival at the parking location by feeding the meter. Although a user can reserve a parking space prior to arrival, users cannot specify the parking options to optimize the reservations. Optimizing reservations allows people to automatically recharge (i.e., extend the reservation) until space is vacated or even be alerted that the meter is about to expire, asked to recharge, etc.

Available solutions are restricted to the use of a system-driven online application to remotely make reservations. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) solutions are available that reserve a place for a fixed time and then timeout. Existing systems keep track of the number of open parking spaces and when parking spaces are becoming available (not as they become available).

Existing systems are not able to locate the best parking location (not parking space) or a filter-based parking location. Existing systems cannot specify remote recharge options and cannot alert users/towing agencies/law enforcement/others. Existing systems do not use license plate information to track incoming/outgoing cars in real-time

The novel contribution is a system that enables users to locate all available parking places around an event location and reserve parking based on location filters, date and time range, etc. Using the location-based filters, the system can recommend where one or more parking spaces are available for people travelling together. The automated parking reservation system provides the following:


 Alerts to users to recharge for

minutes/days at the time of making the reservation


 Remote monitoring of the meter status (requires recharge, expired, etc.)


 Tracking of incoming and outgoing cars using license plate numbers


 Sending of safety alerts letting users know of any incident that may have happened around the parking location


 Automated phone reservation options for the elderly population/other population not comfortable with computer skills or do not own smart phone, or countries without reliable or readily available Internet access


 Enhanced security via built-in camera in the parking meters that monitor activities

Reserve a Parking Space

This invention enables people to remotely reserve the optimal parking space. This improved method allows users to specify at the time of reservation options. People can reserve a parking space either by going online or via an automated phone system. The reservation process provides filters such as "group search" for people travelling as group in separate cars, closest to event location, further from event location, min-max range in yards or weighting options such as not in an area with high crime rate, close to friends, etc. The reservation process provides a transaction number without giving the
