Abstract

• For the first time in history, more than half of world's population, 3.5 billion people, live in urban centers.


• By 2030, 59%, ~ 5 billion people, will live in cities. During the next two decades, developing countries will absorb nearly a billion additional urban dwellers with China (900 million city dwellers) and India (600 million) leading the way. Rates of urban growth in developed countries.


• Cities have become the main driver of globalization and the engine of economic growth. They have quickly transformed their economies through internal trade, attracting large multinational corporations, international media and foreign tourism. Importantly, a rise in urban population has historically led to an increase in per capita GDP, a key driver for aviation.


• According to a Mc Kinsey Global Institute study, cities on average account for more than 50% of gross domestic in almost all countries. In fact, urbanization provides crucial opportunities for people in search of higher income and a better standard of living. World GDP is becoming less unequally as globalization and urbanization proceed.

• There are almost 2.500 A/P worldwide which are served by regular scheduled traffic, however, as we have seen, global air traffic is concentrated on a rather small number of airports.


• The largest 100 airports handle 50% of the global flight movements and if we expand the number of airports to the largest 1000 airports, virtually all flight movements (95%) are covered.


• Thus, there is a situation of traffic being highly concentrated on important airports which already have a high degree of capacity utilisation, and while there is a strong growth of air traffic worldwide in the past, and we can expect a continuation of growth in the future, and some important airports are faced with more or less severe capacity constraints.


• They are many airports with high traffic loadings which experience near capacity utilisation during many hours of the day, every day, like London Heathrow, Frankfurt, R. Reagan Washington or New York LaGuardia and others…
