Abstract

Alcohol resistant floor coatings are critical to any business or operation where protecting flooring substrates is desired and aesthetic qualities must be maintained.. Solutions containing alcohol can destroy floor coatings rendering them unappealing and exposing the underlying flooring substrate to damage resulting in significant costs. It is generally desirable to minimize the ability of floor coatings to be damaged by alcohol and maintain performance properties. It has been found that use of various silane compounds, along with aqueous based polymers, can be used to prepare alcohol resistant coatings for floors that are durable and removable. The disclosed compositions are more versatile than existing coatings, offering alcohol resistance and the qualities expected of a floor finish.

Problem:

It is generally desirable to minimize the ability of floor coatings to be damaged by alcohol and maintain performance properties.

There has been a need for alcohol resistant coating systems that are more durable in industrial, institutional and consumer environments and can be removed when necessary.   An alcohol resistant coating combining the resistance performance of extremely expensive systems typically based on “crosslinked” systems, and ease of installation associated with typical floor polishes and not exhibiting the drawbacks of either, is needed in the industry.

Solution:  It has been found that use of various silane compounds, along with aqueous based polymers, can be used to prepare alcohol resistant coatings for floors that are durable and removable. The disclosed compositions are more versatile than existing coatings, offering alcohol resistance and the qualities expected of a floor finish.

The polymeric component of the polymer composition can include pendent silane groups.  In other polymer compositions, the polymeric component does not include attached pendent silane groups, but is blended, mixed, or otherwise combined with a distinct silane that optionally, but preferably, can have a functional group capable of reacting with the polymer so that reaction between the polymer and reactive silane compound results, at some point, in a silane-containing polymer.  The combination can also occur by incorporating the silane as a formulation ingredient to the coating composition.

The  “Silane” can be added “as is”, dissolved, dispersed, suspended, or otherwise entrained in a liquid such as water, an organic solvent, or a combination thereof.  In certain embodiments, the polymer composition may be present as a solid and is the only solid material present in the liquid. The polymer composition optionally can contain other ingredients such as solvent, additional polymer(s), as well as any of a variety of additives.
