Abstract

This publication describes interfaces (i.e., application programming interface (“API”), user interfaces (“UI”s), etc.) to assist application administrators (e.g., Share Point administrators, database administrators, administrators, etc.) in partially defining a backup policy. As the application administrators own the data to be backed-up, this solution will define backup system (e.g., NetBackup) interfaces that allow application administrators to specify clients for backup, schedules, and attributes (i.e., retention period, encryption, data classification, etc.). Also, this solution provides an interface for application restore and reporting.

Application Specific Extensions for Effective and Automated Coordination among Application and Backup Administrators

Problem Statement

Database administrators ("DBAs") may have to configure their own backup policies. DBAs may need to work with the backup administrators to configure backup policies. There are many variations in how DBAs configure backup policies. DBAs may not consider how their backup policies match up with the backup policies of other DBAs. DBAs may not understand the complexities of the backup and recovery suite that is being used.

It would be advantageous if DBAs could offer more self-service power to application owners with...
