Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for improving the speed and efficiency of the airline passenger boarding process by directing and optimizing the placement of carry-on luggage of one or more passengers in an overhead luggage compartment by determining the dimensions of the luggage with an image capture and shape recognition device. The method and system determines the dimensions of the carry-on luggage using an imaging capture during passenger boarding, and recommends an optimal placement for the carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment based on a volumetric analysis of available luggage space in the overhead luggage compartment.

Disclosed is a method and system for directing and optimizing the placement of carry-on luggage of multiple passengers in an overhead luggage compartment by determining the dimensions of the luggage with an image capture shape recognition device, such as with one or more digital cameras. The method and system determines the dimensions of the carry-on luggage and recommends an optimal placement for the carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment using a volumetric analysis of available luggage space in the overhead luggage compartments. The optimal placement of the luggage is determined by a calculation of the remaining, available space, as well as a ruleset to identify the most efficient location for the luggage belonging to each individual passenger. The recommended optimal placement of the carry-on luggage is provided to each passenger prior to the entry to an aircraft. The recommended optimal placement is determined for each passenger based on a their seat location and the proximity of the seat to the available overhead compartment space. The placement location of the carry-on luggage is displayed as a graphical image and may be provided to the passenger by various methods such as a computer display screen, printed ticket, or mobile device application

In one implementation, the method and system determines optimal placement of the carry-on luggage as follows as one or more passengers board an airplane:


Image capture of the passenger and carry-on luggage during the boarding process, preferably when the passenger's boarding pass is scanned by a gate agent.


Computation of the dimensions of each carry-on luggage that is with the passenger.


Calculate available volumetric space in the overhead compartment directly above a passenger's seat.


If space is not available in the overhead compartment directly above the passenger's seat, the method and system determines if space is available across an aisle in the same row.


If space is not available in the same row, the method and system determines the closest location in the overhead compartment in front of the passenger's seat. The passenger may drop off the passenger's bag in a compartment prior to reaching the passenger's seat without having to walk back against the flow of other passengers boarding.


As the airplane fills with passengers and luggage, in some cases the only available space can be aft of the passenger's assigned seat. In this case, a flight attendant can collect the luggage and help place the luggage in the suggested compartment without requiring the passenger to move from the assigned seat during the boarding process.
