Abstract

This invention introduces a method and a mechanism to capture reference size via webcam for e-commercial searching engines. It provides a human-computer interactive mechanism for customer who does not know the exact sizes of the goods he is going to buy, to simply provide approximate sizes via webcam. Then the search engine can filter the records and list candidate goods that fuzzy match the provided reference size and match other filtering criteria as well.

As the total amount of online purchases reached several trillions, the returns of goods are costing retailer and consumers over ten millions a year. There is an urgent need for a solution to increase customer satisfaction so to reduce return rate.

The main reason of returns is inappropriate size. While size guides are offered on most sites, people rarely used them, as they were not familiar with measurements. For example, people cannot imagine a cuboid with a volume of 24*12*30cm without a ruler. On the other hand, people don't require an extreme accuracy except for specific items such as shoes. Usually a close approximation is acceptable.

A proximity sensor is able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. The technology has been in the business of developing cell phones and all-in-one PCs.


2.1 Invention summary


In this invention, we introduce a method and a mechanism to capture reference size via webcam for e-commercial searching engines. It provides a human-computer interactive mechanism for customer who does not know the exact sizes of the goods he is going to buy, to simply provide approximate sizes via webcam. Then the search engine can filter the records and list candidate goods that fuzzy match the provided reference size and match other filtering criteria as well.

Make user's search more efficient. The products not matched in size will not be shown which will save user's time.

Simplify the search criteria input. User doesn't need to measure and type the size in high precision. This greatly expand the audience who is not able to

measure at that time.

Reduce the waste of resource: Reduce the opportunity of buying the inappropriate size of the Goods online. thus reducing the cost associated with

exchange or return of goods.

More users get benefit: This method can be widely used in mobile device and personal computer with camera equipment.


2.3 Invention by example


For instance, a customer wants to buy a storage box, which he does not know the exact size and which is not necessary, he can simply provides the rough length, weight and height of the storage box by gesturing them one by one or showing a reference in front of the webcam.

1. Analyze the input to get which category of products the customers want to purchase. If the product shape is in compliance with any kind of geometric forms (sphere, cuboids, cylinder, etc) then enter the next step.
