Abstract

The method described depicts how a sand control system can be constructed with a larger internal diameter by under reaming the borehole that will be over the area that will be fraced. This construction method allows for the use of larger diameter screens to be run on the Sandface assembly which in turn increases the internal diameter of the Sandface assembly while still preserving adequate flow area between the borehole ID and screen OD. This increase in ID allows for better stimulation and production rates. This method describes a multi-zone frac pack system that is run and set in the casing with the top packer. The rest of the iso packers will be set in the open hole . The novel features are the well construction techniques and using these techniques to optimize a multi-zone completion system with the largest ID possible for a given drift requirement. These techniques could allow multi-zone frac pack systems to be designed with ID’s larger than currently possible. The increase in ID would lead to a significant increase (non-linear increase) in the flow rate at which said system could stimulate formations. Production benefits would also be realized with a larger ID. By selectively under reaming the open hole, which will be radially opposite the screen, the annular flow area between the open hole and screen OD increases. It is well established that certain radial clearances must be maintained between the open hole ID and screen OD. It is this parameter which in the past has kept service and oil companies from running screens close to the hole/screen drift for frac/gravel pack treatments. However, if the hole is under reamed radially outward, larger screens can be run, just under borehole drift diameter, while maintaining the industry accepted screen to casing radial clearances
