Apparatus and Method for providing Smart Print Services to manage all print applications

Installing print drivers, configuring printers, and optimizing printers for specific print applications involve many manual steps. To do this, the user must know what drivers and settings are required; users do not always have this information. In addition, there are vendor-specific applications for certain printers and printer description languages but there are no intelligent print services for managing and handling printers.

The novel contribution is a unique method of using intelligent print services to automatically configure, manage, and optimize all printers regardless of models, drivers, or makes for all client print applications. This method also takes advantage of the application driver to facilitate Postscript printing. The method enables automatic conversion from one printer description language to another, management with on-the-fly configuration of printers for a specific print application, and built in self-correction/self-diagnostics for dealing with print request errors

The method comprises two major components: a Smart Print Service (SPS) application driver with an SPS client service and an SPS Print Manager. These components use the SPS application driver to talk to the SPS client service, which is served by the SPS

Print Manager. The SPS Printer Manager helps automatically configure printers and optimize associated settings for all print applications with the ability to diagnose and self-correct Postscript errors for Postscript printers. In addition, the SPS print manager can convert one printer description to another.

The SPS application driver and client service are installed on the client (e.g., personal computer (PC), mobile device, table...
