A Method and Apparatus in an API Economy for Asset Identification and Services Specification

As users evolve to an Internet of Things world, the number of devices is expected to reach the trillions. These devices can range from small sensors to complex assets. Most systems require configuration at the server side for the asset that defines the asset and its associated services (often programmatically). While this approach is tolerable for small numbers of devices, it is not capable of scaling to the advancing large number of smart devices.

The novel concept is to create a method by which devices can be associated with a unique identifier. When the devices connect the environment, this unique identifier can be used to connect to a device capabilities service, which identifies the device type and, more importantly, links to associated services for the device. The capabilities services can be provided by a broker or by the device manufacturer. Services associated with the device can include an analytics service for processing operations data from the device, a warranty service for automating the warranty process, a specifications service for providing operational specifications for the device, a software/firmware maintenance service, etc. By associating the services with a device identifier, the services can be updated by the provider and the consumer of the device need to not be aware of the underlying specifics of the services.

The method can draw on similar proven c...
