Method and System for Switching Data between Shared and Distributed Repositories

Disclosed is a method and system for switching data between shared and distributed repositories.

The method and system allows a network cluster to switch from one of the shared data repository to distributed data repository or vice versa while maintaining the network cluster in an upstate. Switching of data can be performed in two different ways , such as, from a shared disk data model to a distributed data model and from a distributed data model to a shared disk data model. Both the cases require a cluster administrator (CA) to initiate the switch process. Cluster software on each computer in the cluster coordinates to determine if the computers are able to switch between data models .

In accordance with the method and system, as shown in the figure 1, switch from a shared disk data model to a distributed data model is initiated by CA . Upon initiating, CA's computer sets lock on shared disk to prevent changes and reads entire shared data.

Thereafter CA's computer distributes shared data to cluster computers to determine if the computers can make the switch. Accordingly, the cluster computers checks with
the CA's computer for switching to other data model or remain in the same data model . Thereafter, CA's computer informs the status to CA if the cluster computers choose to switch or remain in same the data model. When the cluster computers are ready to switch, the CA's com...
