Abstract

A portable electronic device (1) comprises a control device (201), a chemical sensor (226) that is sensitive to a chemical analyte, and an output device (230-236) coupled to the control device. The control device carries out a measurement with the chemical sensor. It determines whether the portable electronic device has been handled appropriately during the measurement. If the portable electronic device has not been handled appropriately, the control device operates the output device to present information to a user of the portable electronic device. The information may include instructions to handle the portable electronic device in a specific manner. Determination whether the portable electronic device has been handled appropriately may be based on one or more parameters measured by a second sensor (211-225) that is different from the chemical sensor (226).

TECHNICAL FIELD

The present invention relates to a portable electronic device comprising at least one chemical sensor, and to a method of operating a portable electronic device.

PRIOR ART

Portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones or tablet computers, are usually equipped with several sensors, e.g. a microphone, a touch screen, one or more gyroscopes, one or more acceleration sensors, a magnetic field sensor, a proximity sensor, and one or more cameras. They may also be equipped with a temperature sensor and/or a humidity

sensor.

It is also possible to integrate sensors that are sensitive to one or more chemical analytes into a portable electronic device. Sensors that are sensitive to one or more chemical analytes will in the following be called "chemical sensors". US 8,280,436 discloses a breath analysis sensor in a mobile phone to determine a measure for the blood alcohol level of a user of the phone.

When measurements are carried out with a chemical sensor in a portable electronic device, it is often necessary that the user handles the portable electronic device in a specific manner. Otherwise, the results obtained from the sensor might be meaningless. For instance, if blood alcohol level is to be determined from breath, it must be ensured that the user exhales at the portable electronic device in a specific location, with sufficient strength and over a sufficient amount of time to ensure that a sufficient amount of exhaled air reaches the sensor.

Compliance with the required handling conditions can be ensured by operating the chemical sensor only if certain preconditions are fulfilled. For instance, in US 8,280,436 breath analysis is carried out only during time intervals when a phone call is made by the user. Otherwise, no measurements are carried out. However, it is often desired to carry out a measurement upon a user request, e.g., when the user pushes a button on the device, even if such preconditions are not fulfilled.
