Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for preserving fuel of a vehicle by disengaging the transmission. The method and system detects release of a foot of a driver from a gas pedal and disengages the transmission. The method and system also detects the intention of the driver to press the gas pedal and engages the transmission if the driver intends to press the gas pedal. The method and system executes a gear synchronization process to synchronize rotation speeds of the transmission and an engine before the driver presses the gas pedal.

Disclosed is a method and system for preserving fuel of a vehicle by disengaging transmission. The method and system detects a release of a foot of a driver from a gas pedal and disengages the transmission to conserve the fuel . The gas pedal refers to a mechanism that enables the driver to release the fuel to operate the vehicle . Here, the fuel refers to a material such as, but not limited to, electricity and gasoline, that is used to operate the vehicle. Further, the method and system detects an intention of the driver to press the gas pedal and engages the transmission. When the transmission is engaged, an engine and the transmission rotate at different speeds . Therefore, a gear synchronization process is executed to synchronize rotation speeds between the transmission and the engine.

The figure illustrates a flowchart of the method steps for preserving the fuel .

As shown in the figure, initially the method and system detects if the driver has removed the foot from the gas pedal. Thereafter in the next step, the system decides whether
the transmission is to be disengaged based on certain factors . The factors include, but are not limited to, a position and a stage of an upcoming stop sign , a position of the

vehicle in relation to a next turn in a Global Positioning System (GPS) guided route, proximity sensors of the vehicle and obstacles surrounding the vehicle . Thereafter, the method and system detects a position of the foot of the driver and a motion of the gas pedal. If the foot completely releases the gas pedal but still touches the gas pedal or hovers over the gas pedal, then the transmission is not disengaged. Alternately, if the foot completely releases the gas pedal and rests on a floor or hovers over a brake , then the system decides to disengage the transmission according to the next step of the flowchart. The driver is informed about the disengagement of the transmission and preserving of the fuel by one of a light indication and an audio indication on a dashboard.

According to the next step as shown in the flowchart, the system then detects the intention of the driver to press the gas pedal and initiates the gear synchronization process. For initiating the gear synchronization process, a speed of movement of the foot towards the gas pedal is calculated using the proximity sensors .
