A method and system is disclosed for determining a likely response time of a user in an Instant Messaging (IM) environment. The method and system determines the likely response time for the user based on a timing of previous responses sent by the user.

When a user talks to other users in an Instant Messaging (IM) environment, the user is usually displayed with a time elapsed since the last activity. This information is of little importance to the user. Instead, the user needs to know the likely response time so that the user knows an approximate waiting time before getting a response from a recipient.

Disclosed is a method and system for determining a likely response time of a user in an Instant Messaging (IM) environment based on a timing of previous responses sent by the user. The method and system also builds a response time profile for the user based on a plurality of factors such as response time during a particular time period, response related to particular user and the like. The method and system further displays a likely response time in a status bar of the user after sending a message to a recipient, as shown in Figure.

In an embodiment of the present invention, a chat user logs into an IM client and starts communicating with a recipient. In accordance with the scenario, a response time profile is generated or updated based on the replies sent by the recipient. The response time profile is used to determine the likely response time for the recipient. Factors such as, but not limited to, time of the day, nature of discussion, geographic region and calendars of the users are considered to calculate the response time. For example, users may be taking more time while replying to a chat message for a certain time period i.e. 1 PM to 4 PM, due to some daily assignments during that period.
