    Today most of Software Asset Management systems base their software discovery on software catalog, that includes software discovery signatures. Such collection of software discovery signatures, may consist of different types of signature such as file signatures, registry signatures etc. because software installed on the machine may be found by analysis of several system resources.

    Because of multiple ways to discover software, it is quite frequent that there is more than one signature entry in the software catalog that is used to find one and the same software release. However, every additional signature in the software catalog means that there is more to evaluate on each analyzed machine, hence the bigger the catalog, the longer and more resource consuming the scan. This is why duplicated signatures, that in fact discover one and the same product release, even if they use different ways to do that have unwanted performance impact.

    Presented idea is to perform analysis of the signatures that were matched in the environment to check if at the same time, more than one signature matches on all scanned systems. Regardless of a method that signature uses to discover software, if it is matched every time other signature is matched and both discover the same software release, one of them is expendable.

    Main idea behind the software catalog optimization is to remove any duplicated signatures that do not bring any value but impact scan time and resource consumption. SAM system users are allowed to configure whether they want to enable or disable our optimization feature, schedule optimization and also select preferred software discovery signature type (file, registry, etc.)
