Disclosed is a method and system for providing dynamic escape planner for enabling high availability (HA) in a data center. The method and system provides maximum number of virtual machines (VMs) for enabling HA by restarting the VMs during failover of servers in a data center. VMs are restarted using a remote restart agent. While restarting VMs on failover, a multi-mode planner introduces service-level agreement (SLA) dependent resource reduction of migrated VMs . A level at which SLA is
introduced, varies from highest level SLA VMs to lower level SLA VMs. During a fail over, highest level SLA VMs suffer minimal or no reduction of capacity from resources that are assigned to them, while VMs with lower level of SLA get reduced capacity from
resources assigned to them. The resource capacity change is determined using SLA level and capacity reduction calculator.
The SLA information, or restart priority information is obtained from a different server than a failed server, and based on the obtained information , the dynamic escape planner determines the level of scaling the restart resources . This approach can easily be implemented for reduced resources compared to the original VM resources if the
VMs are to be restarted on a different server. Thus, the highest SLA VM have minimal or none resource reduction, and the lowest level SLA have the most resources reduction assigned for a restarted VM.
In accordance with the method and system, as shown in the figure, the remote restart agent which is placed on a management server, checks functionality of all servers in a resource pool.
