Abstract

We have built a plugin to print a sub-surface model using a 3D printer. The 3D print shows the sub-surface model geometry, however in the digital model there is a lot of additional information like model properties, intersecting wells, faults, etc. An example embodiment uses augmented reality to augment the 3D printed model with information in the digital model.

Detailed Description

A 3D model is printed from a geology and geophysics software.

The 3D printed model has a set of reference points or shapes printed in addition to the geometry. These points can be detected by an augmented reality device, but are not necessarily visible by humans. This is similar to what is more known as stereotaxic frames in the field of augmented surgery but for geology.

When the physical model is viewed with the augmented reality device additional properties and/or objects are added depending on the viewer’s 3D position relatively to the 3D printed geological model.
