Abstract

Virtual interface (as known as vPort) is a cost effective way to allocate, share and dynamically control network throughput. vPort appears as a physical interface to the host and can intelligently adjust bandwidth allocations dynamically as traffic needs change. This invention is trying to provide a way to monitor the traffic received from or transmitted to a vPort. It is really useful and helpful when we need to monitor the vPort network status, or debug data on vPort, or diagnose errors on a vport. Also, this invention is trying to provide a way to make vPort as a monitor port. It means we can have a network analyzer or security application in the virtual machine. And the monitor traffic won’t affect normal data traffic.

Traffic monitor device or system can get the statusof network by analyzing the packets captured by port mirroring. The Port mirroring is used on a network switch to send a copy of network packets seen on one switch port (or an entire VLAN) to a network monitoring connection on another switch port. It is supported on both physical switch and virtual switch.

Virtual interface (as known as vPort) is a cost effective way to allocate, share and dynamically control network throughput. vPort appears as a physical interface to the host and can intelligently adjust bandwidth allocations dynamically as traffic needs change. And now, each physical port can be divided into at most four vPorts.

But till now, there's no solution can easily monitor the traffic received from or transmitted to vPort.

Usually, Port1 on physical switch in Figure1 can be the mirror port or monitor port, but the vPort can not be the mirror port or monitor port.

This invention is trying to provide a way to monitor the traffic received from or transmitted to a vPort. It is really useful and helpful when we need to monitor the vPort network status, or debug data on vPort, or diagnose errors on a vport.

Also, this invention is trying to provide a way to make vPort as a monitor port. It means we can have a network analyzer or security application in the virtual machine. And the monitor traffic won't affect normal data traffic.

The following figure Figure2 illustrates how vPort acts as mirror port.

In this situation, vPort 4 acts like a mirror port, Ext Port10 is act like a monitor port.

To make vPort as mirror, the switch will support following behaviors, which are the innovations comparing to traditional concepts.
