Abstract

The invention proposes a technique to control window/level based on a region of interest (ROI). A user quickly indicates the region of interest for optimal viewing in a convenient interactive manner. The region of interest is analyzed and automatic window/level is applied using only pixels within the region of interest. A mouse control is associated with identifying region of interest. The mouse control in a prototype implementation is centered about a neighborhood such as a rectangular region or circular region. The region freely moves about an image. While the region is moved, the window/level settings are automatically updated. The window/level settings are automatically updated to provide automatic window/level values for the region of interest.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and more particularly to a window/ level control in the MRI system.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Generally, magnetic resonance (MR) images cover a large range of intensity. A specific anatomy of interest demands manual adjustment of a window/level setting. Window/ level is a frequent problem for customers in certain areas. One of the areas is when the window/level is to be optimized around a specific region of an image and the remaining image only serves as contextual reference.

A conventional technique relates to a method for automatically determining window/level settings in a digital image of a subject. The digital image is accessed. Body part or coil type information is then obtained. A region of interest (ROI) within the digital image is determined. The ROI-histogram is then produced and processed. The window/level value for a linear or non-linear image intensity range re-mapping is defined. The linear or non-linear re-mapping of the image intensity range is performed.

One of the other conventional techniques relates to a digital image display apparatus. The digital image display apparatus displays an image by converting pixel value of a digital image data into brightness. The conversion is done by means of a display window. The display window sets a window/ level and a window width.

However, automatic window/level algorithms and implementations do not provide any distinction of which region of the image is of interest.

Hence, there exists a need in the art for an improved window/level control based on region of interest.
