Abstract

The invention proposes a technique for trapping radio activity leakage produced from cyclotron or accelerator before the leakage reaches to the cooling water system. The irradiated water is cooled by an outside cooling water system during proton bombardment. An ion exchanger is placed in a return cooling water connection to avoid contamination of irradiated water with cooling water system. The radio activity is trapped on a first pass using the ion exchanger. The radio activity leakage is minimized before the radio activity leakage reaches to the cooling water system.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to a cooling water system and more particularly to a technique for trapping radio activity leakage produced from cyclotron or accelerator before the leakage reaches to the cooling water system.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Generally, cooling water system includes an ion exchange cartridge which is placed in a system. The ion exchange cartridge provides de-ionized water to the system. The ion exchanger collects or traps radio activity. The ion exchanger is placed inside the cooling water system for reasons such as size and primary function. Radio activity leakage is accumulated in a position where personnel are at risk of being irradiated or exposed to radio activity. As a result, personnel suffer from health risks.

Hence, there exists a need in the art for trapping and controlling radio activity leakage before the radio activity leakage blends with rest of the cooling water system.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention proposes a technique for trapping radio activity leakage produced from cyclotron or accelerator before the leakage reaches to the cooling water system.  The technique includes an ion exchanger placed in a return cooling water connection to avoid contamination of the irradiated water with the cooling water system.
