Abstract 

A continuous and real time design with low cost weight-check mechanism to screen out 100% of the tablet to be used for the molding process.  The under-weight tablets can cause various defects cosmetically and as well as potential reliability problems due to insufficient package compactness.

Currently, the common detection is done using a through beam sensor to detect any tablets that are short, either wrong size or broken tablets.  However for partial broken as in ‘chipped’ tablets, this cannot be detected (Fig 1). Hence this will proceed to the molding station and resulting in defective units.

If the subsequent process is careful enough to screen out the defect it will be scrapped.

Due to difficulty to install individual weighing scale into the mold system, we are proposing to design-in a comparative weight offset mechanism to ensure all tablets are meeting the ‘set’ or correct weight range before use (Fig 2). This can be implemented into the tablet loader of a preloading station inside the mold equipment. Connect in parallel along each load.

Detection of anomaly can then be detected through an electrical open-short circuit (Fig 3) or a standard through-beam sensor due to its ‘higher’ position when under weight (Fig 4).
