A Method for Associating Goals with an Activity Stream containing Workflow Updates

Disclosed is a method for associating one or more goals with an activity stream in a social network. The activity stream contains one or more workflow updates to be acted upon by one or more team members working on a common project.

The method includes extending a messaging platform of the social network to support displaying of the one or more goals for the activity stream. In an implementation, the messaging platform is extended by adding an extra field for representing at least one goal of the one or more goals for the activity stream. The extra field can be embedded within a corresponding workflow update of the one or more workflow updates posted in the activity stream. Alternatively, the method can extend the messaging platform by providing a secondary service for supporting display of the one or more goals.

The method further includes associating the one or more goals to the one or more

workflow updates in the activity stream. In an embodiment, the one or more goals are assigned by a user. The user can be one of, but not limited to, a team member, an administrator and a service actor. The user can also assign a final objective for the common project in the form of an end goal, along with a number of steps required to reach the end goal. In accordance with the embodiment, the method prompts the user to assign a goal, by displaying a dialog box. The method can prompt the user in response to detecting an attempt by the user to perform an action such as, but not limited to, post a workflow update to the activity stream and view a

workflow update in the activity stream. The method can alternatively allow the user to assign a goal, wherein an icon can be provided in the activity stream for the user

to select and assign the goal.

In another embodiment, the method can automatically identify the one or more goals by performing one or more of pattern recognition and text analytics, on content of the one or more workflow updates. Further, the automatic identification can be performed by detecting dependencies between the one or more workflow updates.

The method also enables posting and associating metadata such as comments, for the one or more goals.

The method further includes displaying the one or more goals to a team member viewing the activity stream. In an implementation, the method displays one or more goals associated with a workflow update, subsequent to detecting a team member viewing the workflow update. Additionally, the one or more goals can be presented in the social network as one or more of, a type ahead and a drop down list.
