Accessibility requirements of pedestrian routes significantly vary for different users . For some people, typical pedestrian route planning, such as that available through

web-based mapping applications, might not be appropriate. For example, a person in a

wheelchair may experience difficulty navigating an unpaved street verge, and thus a paved street one block over may be more appropriate. Further, within communities of

people with disabilities, the accessibility requirements of individuals vary significantly. Thus, a categorization of "wheelchair access" may be overly restrictive or include routes inaccessible to some members, depending on individual needs. For example, an active, fit person in a particular style of wheelchair may be able to negotiate curbs that are inaccessible to a motorized wheelchair, while the motorized wheelchair is able to

access grassed verges inaccessible to a user with a manual wheelchair who has limited fitness.

While resources do exist to assist people with disabilities with route planning , such resources are generally labor intensive or offer limited capabilities to customize the resource to the specific needs of the user . Typical systems do not learn from the experiences of the user and the community of users .

Existing solutions for pedestrian routing utilize very broad descriptions of accessibility requirements, with no opportunity for the user to review the obstacles avoided (or encountered) by route options, nor to contribute to the classification of routes as relevant to personal circumstances.

The proposed system and method addresses the limitations found in existing pedestrian navigation tools for people with varied accessibility requirements . The solution incorporates a finer classification of accessibility requirements through user profiles combined with a feedback loop from the end user .

With this system, users with disabilities (e.g., motor or visual impairments) can plan the path from point A to point B by considering personal accessibility requirements and any obstacles along the way.
