A Method and System for Providing a Variable Shared Content based upon Permissions within a Document

Disclosed is a method and system for providing a variable shared content based upon permissions within a document. The method and system varies a portion of the document based on an identity of a user who is either viewing or editing the document. The method and system enables the user to provide specifications in order to define an access permission for the document. The specifications include information about one of allowing everybody to access the document, allowing everybody to access the document except for people mentioned on a list and denying everybody to access the document except for people mentioned on the list. Here, the list includes one or more of individuals and groups. The method and system then saves the specifications provided by the user within the document. Whenever an additional user tries to access the document, a server identifies the additional user and displays a content that the additional user is permitted to access.

Initially the user downloads a shared document system on a computer. Thereafter, the shared document system authenticates the user. The user then loads the document on the shared document system. When the additional user tries to access the document, the method and system identifies a unique identifier associated with the additional user. The unique identifier is then compared to a marker associated with the document. Here, the marker indicates the specifications provided by the user to define the access permission. Thereafter, the method and system displays the content to the additional user which the additional user is permitted to access. For instance, if the document contains two paragraphs and the additional user is permitted to access only second paragraph of the two paragraphs, then only the second paragraph is displayed to the additional user.

Further, the method and system enables the additional user to edit the content and to add access permissions to a section of the content. The additional user informs the method and system about the section of the content to which the access permissions are to be added. For example, the additional user highlights the content and then selects appropriate access permission from either a toolbar menu or a context menu option. If the additional user edits the content with a markup language, then the markup language is included around the content to indicate the access permissions.

The method and system also enables the additional user to edit an existing access permiss...
