The disclosed invention uses an active pen to simulate textures of on-screen content.

The invention solves the lack of tactile sensation, such as porous materials, soft, hard or texture, on touch screens through the use of a pen or stylus. The pen has a battery, a communication radio with the on-screen device (such as Bluetooth), a motor vibration system, electrostatic generator and a capacitive tip. The pen communicates with the touch screen device to understand the type of image displayed on-screen. The vibration forces on the pen change intensity as it graces over different type of content (such as bumps, slopes, holes, etc) to simulate texture and give the feeling of sensation. For example, the vibration system could simulate the difference in friction between paper and pencil versus whiteboard and marker.

Electric charge changes transferred to the pen tip can also be used to simulate roughness or friction on the screen. This could be achieved by changing the electric voltage applied to the pen tip to increase or decrease electrostatic field on the screen.

The perceived frictional force will make the user feel the pen has more or less resistance on top of the glass by the changes in the electrostatic field on the screen.
