In several occasions, pedestrians and drivers in urban centers wait for traffic signals to become green even if no other vehicle is crossing the orthogonal road . Moreover,

waiting time for the traffic signal to go green is perceived as a waste of time if no vehicle passes through the red traffic signal for a long time . Traffic situations are typically very local and hard to predict. Therefore, any technique used to control time intervals cannot account for traffic events.

Disclosed is a method and system for controlling the traffic lights according to information about incoming vehicles. The method and system can be implemented as a component of a traffic management platform managed remotely by a central traffic authority. The opportunistic traffic light control can also be computed locally and embedded in a computer physically collocated within the traffic light .

The method and system identifies a plurality of vehicles moving towards the traffic light that is currently green. The method and system identifies a plurality of vehicles that pass through areas equipped with sensors. The sensors can be, but are not limited to, movement sensors, weight sensors, picture sensors and Global Positioning System (GPS).
