Abstract

Very often natural language used for one kind of audience is inaccessible to another audience. One of the main reasons for this is proficiency. People use different kinds of constructions while trying to convey the same message. In many professions, it becomes essential to bridge this lexical gap. For example, a writer with a limited vocabulary very likely would want to make the text in his article appear more sophisticated before publishing the article. Simple examples include, converting “much better” to “significantly better”, “problems” to “shortcomings”, etc. We propose a system and method that provides the ability to transform the source user’s content to that of the target user’s language in order to specialize the language

A personalized system and method to specialize the language of text

1. Motivation:

Very often natural language used for one kind of audience is inaccessible to another audience. One of the main reasons for this is proficiency. People use different kinds of constructions while trying to convey the same message. In many

professions, it becomes essential to bridge this lexical gap. For example, a writer with a limited vocabulary very likely would want to make the text in his article appear more sophisticated before publishing the article. Simple examples include, converting "much better" to "significantly better", "problems" to "shortcomings", etc. We propose a system and method that provides the ability to transform the source user's content to that of the target user's language in order to specialize the language

2. Prior Art:

Dictionaries have been highly used to obtain synonyms for words/phrases in the text. WhiteSmoke Writer (http://www.whitesmoke.com/style-checker) and Writer's Workbench (www.emo.com) addresses these issues with its powerful style checking and text enrichment. WhiteSmole enriches the text with synonyms and alternate phrasing. Text simplification systems simplify complex constructions to simpler forms. Essay Critiquing systems suggest new themes to be addressed. In "On corpus preparation and deployment of a web-based critiquing system for English essay writing enhancement, Kelvin C.K. Wong, William K.W. Cheung, Fion S.L. Lee and Cynthia F.K. Lee, ICHL, 2008", the teacher decides on an essay topic for students, and collects some relevant background materials such as articles from the internet or textbooks to build a corpus. A list of possible sub-themes which may be included in the essay is extracted from a set of sample essays (from

past students or from books). The similarity between segments (one from the student's essay and one from the sub-theme) is then computed. Sub-themes missing in the student's essays are reported for consideration.

Existing approaches are inadequate as they do not adjust the language in a user-specific manner. Our system is source (the author of the generated content) and target user-specific (intended audience). Our method addresses language and not ideas (as in Essay Critiquing systems).
