Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique that allows up-tower portion of the wind turbine to be locked out and tagged out completely without travel down-tower utilizing minimal space requirements and keeping personal protective gear to a minimum as well. The technique includes a lock out and tag out device. The top box includes disconnect switches which are placed on outside of the top box. As the incidental energy is maintained to be minimal, one simply switches every disconnect switches and de-energize everything inside the top box wearing minimal personal protection equipment (PPE). Then, lock out and tag out (LOTO) is applied to the top box.

UP-TOWER LOCK OUT AND TAG OUT DEVICE

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a wind turbine and more particularly to a technique that allows up-tower portion of the wind turbine to be locked out and tagged out.

LOTO device prevents accidental release of energy and avoids risks of shocks or arc flash in the top box of wind turbine. This is required while carrying out any maintenance or servicing work. Generally, lock out and tag out (LOTO) device is placed outside top box of a wind turbine to prevent other necessary devices such as, jib cranes, computer stations or auxiliary transformers to go inside the wind turbine. However, outside placement of LOTO device allows cumbersome routing of cable harnesses to top boxes and provides cable harnesses to be unsightly as well.  Further, the conventional techniques do not provide ability to lock out and tag out (LOTO) entire up-tower portion of a wind turbine while being up-tower.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present invention proposes a technique that allows up-tower portion of the wind turbine to be locked out and tagged out completely without travel down-tower utilizing minimal space requirements and keeping personal protective gear to a minimum as well. The technique includes a lock out and tag out device. Figure 1 depicts view of a top box from the outside.

As illustrated in Figure 1 above, disconnect switches 1 are placed on outside of the top box. As the incidental energy is maintained to be minimal, one simply switches every disconnect switches and de-energize everything inside the top box wearing minimal personal protection equipment (PPE). Then, lock out and tag out (LOTO) is applied to the top box. Further, area shown around  2 is free to install anything a customer or original equipment manufacturers (OEM) engineers require to install as area around 2 is a highly sought after area.

As illustrated in Figure 2 above, area 2 is on outside of the wall behind area 3. The disconnect switches 1 are on the inside of the enclosure 4.
