Abstract

This invention proposes three states to adaptively switch mobile device keyboard modes. They are landscape mode, holding mode and split mode. Landscape mode is selected by default when keyboard is activated, and the landscape keyboard is presented to user in this mode. When there is pressure signal detected from both left/right sides, this invention turns into the holding mode. In the holding mode, the holding side is set. If there is no signal from holding side for a while, it will return to landscape mode; if a signal detected from holding side exceeds the predefined pressure threshold, our invention goes into split mode. In split mode, a split keyboard is going to be shown to users. When there is no signal from holding side for a while in split mode, the invention will turn back to landscape mode and the keyboard will also revert back to landscape.

As we know there are two keyboard modes for mobile devices right now; one is landscape, and the other is split. When users hold the two sides of devices(left and right), it's much easier to use the split keyboard to type in. But users have to set the keyboard as split mode manually, which is not convenient for them; some users even don't know there is a split keyboard that they can use at all. The invention can present the keyboard mode selection in an easy and natural way when users need it, which makes their input more quick and comfortable. This invention offers a much easier way to switch mobile device keyboard between landscape and split with a pressure sensor integrated along the device edges. Landscape keyboard presents by default when keyboard is activated. When users hold a mobile left/right sides, a pressure signal will be detected by the pressure sensor. If the signal data exceeds a predefined pressure threshold, the keyboard turns into split keyboard; while if pressure signal isn't detected for a while(exceeds a predefined time threshold), the split keyboard will revert back to landscape keyboard. There are many advantages of this invention.

1. Mobile device easy to use, which improves mobile device keyboard usability;

2. Users can type in more easily and friendly;

3. The cost for this invention is very cheap.
