System and method to create a report from a semantically grouped set of widgets in a dashboard environment.

In Business Analytics, people create dashboards using existing reports and report parts. Report parts are, for example, an image, text line, a list, a chart, a crosstab, a filter, etc. Report authors create reports in specialized authoring tools, through

which these report parts are brought together to create a visually appealing report

with advanced queries attached to the shown data. Reports are often reused, either as-is or as the basis of a dashboard, in different parts of an organization. A dashboard creator inserts full reports, but can also include report parts from the report onto a canvas to create a new mash-up for other users

Figure 1: The current flow

The flow shown in Figure 1 indicates only a single direction of creation. Reports are created in one tool, and dashboards reuse the reports in another tool.

The disadvantage of this approach is that it is not possible to create a report from a dashboard. The author must go to a report creation tool to create a new report to be used in dashboards, which can be very time consuming and complicated. The issue becomes particularly challenging when the user does not have the skills to create complex queries as normally created in the report-authoring tool.

The core idea of the novel solution is to create a semantically grouped set of widgets that can be converted into a report.

When a dashboard creator includes a report into a dashboard , the solution allows the user to "ungroup" it into its report part constituents, turning into individual

widgets. If the dashboard creator "groups" independent widgets, the group becomes a "report".

The advantage of this is that reports and dashboards become interchangeable .
