Abstract

Tire flaps are integral parts for tire-tube-rim assemblies. Tire flaps protect the tire innertubes from damage resulting from the heat of the metallic rim and pinching of the innertube between the tire bead toe and rim. Tire flaps are typically manufactured either by injection molding or by compression molding and are typically cured at temperatures greater than 185°C. Aging resistance and tear resistance are important property requirements for tire flaps. Described herein are tire flaps containing propylene-rich polymers. Flaps designed with such propylene-rich polymers can be loaded with high amounts of carbon black and processing oil and can be cured at very high temperatures. The aging resistances of flap compounds containing propylene-rich polymers are improved as compared to general purpose rubber based flap compounds.

Background

     Use of tire flaps is a good practice in assuring proper tire innertube performance. The flap is a rubber protector used with tube-type tires to prevent damage to the innertube resulting from direct contact with tire bead toes, the metallic rim, and the valve slot of the rim. The flap performance requirements include parameters such as:

1. Good durability and flexibility.

2. Aged hardening resistance: Hardened flaps may chip and the hard rubber with hard edges may cause cuts to the tube.

3. Good compression set resistance, i.e. the flap must retain its profile against the wheel or rim in presence of high pressure and heat so as to ensure proper protection of the innertube.


4. Good heat degradation resistance.
