Abstract

A process may require at least certain disk space in a file system to run and function normally. For a long-running process such as creating a development sandbox, it can be frustrating when the process aborts after running for a long time due to shortage of disk space. This invention tries to address this problem by pre-allocating disk space for the process before it starts.

Collaboratively Reserve disk space

A process may require at least certain disk space in a file system to run and function normally. For a long-running process such as creating a development sandbox, it can be frustrating when the process aborts after running for a long time due to shortage of disk space. This invention tries to address this problem by pre-allocating disk space for the process before it starts.

One existing solution for solving this problem is to create a file system with enough disk space and only allow the user who runs the process to have the access to the file system. But there are two main drawbacks to this solution.

1. System administrator needs to get involved.

2. If the process is not needed, the reserved disk space can't be used by other users.

The main idea of this invention is to specify the disk space needed for a process. When the process starts, it checks whether there is enough disk space available for it. If there is not enough space, the process will fail. If there is enough space, the specified disk space will be reserved and the reservation can be viewed by other users. After the space is reserved for the process, it can't be used by other processes until the process finishes and the space for it is removed. The advantages of the invention is:
1. System administrator does not need to get involved.

2. Since reservation info is viewable to all users, other users can notify and ask the user to release the not needed disk space in a...
