On-the-fly Virtual Disk Format Translator

Problem Statement

Currently, the process of translating a virtual disk format into another format requires offline translation. For example, converting a source disk (e.g. VHD) into a target format (e.g., VMDK) would require an offline translator, and a file that is inconveniently unusable until the format conversion is complete.

Virtual disks can be very large in size, and the time required to convert from one format into another is directly proportional to the amount of data the virtual disk container is storing at the time of conversion. Furthermore, once the conversion is complete, the amount of space taken is double what was originally required (since both the source and destination formats are now real files on the storage media).
