Axial Scrolling With A Unidirectional Scroll Input

Unidirectional scroll inputs, such as mouse scroll wheel inputs, default to scrolling along a single axis.

Disclosed is a method and system for multi-axial scrolling with a unidirectional scroll input by using multiple lock buttons for scrolling along multiple axes. The scroll input can be, but need not be, limited to a mouse scroll wheel input.

In one embodiment, the method and system enables permanently locking scrolling along one axis by allowing a user to select a lock button from among a plurality of lock buttons.

Consider a scenario wherein the user is scrolling over a lengthy page displayed in a small viewport as shown in Figure. 1. In the scenario, the method and system allows the user to select a default direction for scrolling using the unidirectional input by clicking on the lock button. This is useful for a situation wherein lengthy content is displayed in a small viewport, particularly when scrolling in an axis different from a default axis is required.
