Disclosed is a method and system for automatically retracting and engaging an air dam for a flash storage system.

The method and system provides an air dam which ducts air through a midplane board as needed during normal operation and automatically retracts out during servicing of the midplane board. Thereafter, the air dam automatically engages again when the servicing is complete. The method and system addresses an issue of enabling the air dam to contact the midplane board and duct air during the normal operation whereas to be out of way during the servicing of the midplane board it contacts. The air dam contacts the midplane board in such a manner that it does not damage the midplane board. The air dam is automatically actuated to ensure that it is in a correct position for normal or service states.

The method and system includes a vertical air dam that contacts the midplane board which is perpendicular and vertical. The air dam routes air flow on either side of it during normal operation. The air dam retracts along with a system module which is unplugged from the midplane board in order to make room for the removal of the midplane board. Thereafter, the air dam engages again when the system module is plugged back into the reinstalled midplane board.
