Abstract

A battery includes a solid electrolyte activating one or one or more negative electrodes. A positive active material is distributed throughout an interior of the electrolyte. The positive active material is a chemical component that includes sulfur. The present discussion relates to electrochemical devices, and more particularly to batteries having a cathode with one or more inactive materials. BACKGROUND

    Rechargeable batteries are desirable for use in a variety of different devices. The performance of these batteries is measured in terms of capacity and or cycle life. Capacity indicates the amount of energy that can be extracted from the battery during discharge. Cycle life indicates the number of times that the battery can be recharged while providing a desirable level of capacity. Accordingly, there is a need for a battery having improved cycle life and/or capacity.

SUMMARY

The present discussion relates to electrochemical devices, and more particularly to batteries

having a cathode with one or more inactive materials. The battery includes a solid electrolyte activating one or more negative electrodes. A positive active material is distributed throughout an interior of the electrolyte. The positive active material is a chemical component that includes sulfur.

    Another embodiment of the battery includes a solid electrolyte activating one or more negative electrodes. The solid electrolyte including one or more salts in a cross-linked polymer. A porous carbon material is distributed throughout the interior of the electrolyte. A positive active material is located in the pores of the porous carbon material and/or a layer of the positive active material is coated on the carbon material. The positive active material is elemental sulfur and the solid electrolyte contacts a positive current collector.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

DESCRIPTION

    Sulfur is desirable for use in the positive electrodes of secondary batteries because sulfur is low cost, abundant, and environmentally safe. Further, sulfur has a high capacity when compared to other positive active materials. For instance, when used as a positive active material, elemental sulfur has a

capacity of about 1675 Ah/kg. However, positive electrodes that use sulfur as the positive active material have undesirably low electrical conductivity. Additionally, the cycle life of batteries that use sulfur as a positive active material are undesirably low.
