Abstract

Xerographic printers and Multifunctional devices (MFD) have toner consumables that need to be replaced periodically. These consumable containers need to be prepared properly prior to insertion in the machine. This idea proposes a method to encourage customers to properly prime consumables before installing them in a xerographic machine. This is accomplished using a battery-powered audio device in the packaging that is activated when opened. Instructions would be conveyed such as the need to shake a toner bottle, and the instructions would repeat for the time needed and at the end would instruct the user to install the unit.

Some form of priming is often needed when xerographic consumable units are replaced:

-- With photo-receptor units, a cord is often used to release beads into the toner, but the toner and beads must be mixed somehow.

-- With toner units, the toner can compact if the bottle has been sitting for a while and needs to be loosened to ensure consistent toner delivery.

In both these examples, the units need to be shaken for a given period of time before installing to ensure they are primed sufficiently.

The packaging of the consumable unit would include a battery powered ‘music box’, similar to those used in birthday cards.  As the packaging is opened, audio instructions would begin playing that tell the engineer/user what to do.  The audio message would ask for the unit to be held in b...
