ABSTRACT: The system and method disclosed in this paper allows for the automatic population and/or verification of the type of seed or chemical product information in a vehicle documentation product application control system. This type of system would be typically found in agricultural equipment used for the planting of seeds or application of chemicals.

Past efforts to track the type of seeds or chemicals applied to farmland included having the operator of the agricultural equipment document what seeds are planted and/or which chemicals have been applied. In addition to this documentation requirement, the operator would also have to verify that the correct seeds and/or chemicals are being applied.

Previous methods of documenting and verifying included the entry of product information into a computer located in the agricultural vehicle. The computer could then track which seeds and/or chemicals were applied by the operator. Typically, the operator of the agricultural equipment would use an input device, such as a touchscreen display or scroll wheel selector to enter into the computer the type of seed or chemical to be applied. Other input methodologies also included selecting the seed and/or chemical using a preset list of options so the operator could simply select which product they were using.

However, both methodologies have their drawbacks. In the first case, it can be time consuming for an operator to enter into the input device the type of seed or chemical they were using. Further, this type of entry was prone to error. In the case where a preselected list of products is stored in the computer, the pre-selective list may be so lengthy that it would hinder the ability of the operator to enter in the correct seed or chemical product. If the list was purposely made short, the list may not be complete, thereby preventing the operator from selecting the right seed or product.

The solution proposed in this paper is an in-vehicle documentation and product application control system. This system generally includes a touch screen connected to a computer

located within the agricultural vehicle. The operator of the agricultural vehicle can, as before, input the type of seed or chemical to be utilized by the agricultural vehicle. However, in addition to this, the operator can also scan the bar code of the seed or chemical as these products are put in vehicle bins for dispensing.

The scanning may be done by a mobile device, such as a mobile phone having a camera phone feature. It should be understood that the mobile device could be any one of a number of different mobile devices not limited to just mobile phones, but could also include other mobile devices such as tablet computers and the like.
