Adaptive Watering System

Automatic lawn sprinkler systems are on timers and are activated regardless of the moisture level of the soil, or the current or future weather predictions. As a result, the sprinklers can be unnecessarily activated (e.g., while it is raining). A method is needed to intelligently manage a sprinkler system integrating the ground moisture content and weather forecast into the sprinkler cycle.

The novel contribution uses known art in the weather prediction infrastructure to send information to a sprinkler system to intelligently and adaptively manage the use of water. The new method uses the ground moisture content along with the probability of rain and the amount of predicted rain to determine whether the lawn or farm acreage requires watering or can wait until the precipitation arrives. This method also keeps the ground moisture content at an optimal level for vegetation growth. In addition, the adaptive watering system takes into account the amount of rain in the prior period, the current and future temperature and humidity levels, and the wind speed over a period to determine whether the evaporation is sufficient to warrant watering the vegetation or whether it is better to wait for natural precipitation and preserve the water resource.
