Abstract

We propose we propose a system and method for infusion pump alarm management, which advantageously enables a user to intuitively and efficiently review alarm information. These advantages in operation of a pump could be provided for single alarms or multiple alarms occurring around the same time. Such a system and method could also allow users to intuitively and efficiently switch between normal and alarm states without compromising patient safety.

Abstract

    We propose we propose a system and method for infusion pump alarm management, which advantageously enables a user to intuitively and efficiently review alarm information. These advantages in operation of a pump could be provided for single alarms or multiple alarms occurring around the same time. Such a system and method could also allow users to intuitively and efficiently switch between normal and alarm states without compromising patient safety.

Disclosure

    In the medical arts, infusion pumps have become useful devices for managing the delivery and dispensation of therapeutic medications to patients. Infusion pumps can provide some significant advantages over manual infusion techniques, by accurately delivering and dispensing infusates over an extended period of time. Infusion pumps can be particularly useful for treating diseases and disorders that require regular pharmacological intervention, including cancer, diabetes, and vascular, neurological, and metabolic disorders.

   An infusion pump typically incorporates or utilizes some type of alarm system, to alert a health care practitioner or user of the pump to a condition requiring attention or corrective action. In some situations, users have experienced difficulties in quickly and efficiently responding to various infusion pump alarms. In some instances, it can be difficult to perceive or understand a cause for an alarm calling for attention or corrective action. In other circumstances, it can be difficult to perceive or understand multiple alarms occurring simultaneously and discriminate among all of them to take corrective action on the most important or urgent alarms. The term "alarm fatigue" has been used in association with, and in describing, these occurrences; and alarm fatigue may result during operation of an infusion pump in several ways. For example, visual alarm displays may be shown in a relatively small area of a pump's display screen or graphical user interface (GUI) such as in a status bar. In these embodiments, users typically can only view one alarm at a time, even if multiple pump alarms are occurring. Users might thus be unable to check other alarms unless the alarm that is being presently displayed is first cleared. Further, situations may arise with multiple alarms where the user is not intuitively guided to the first alarm to have been signaled or to the most important alarm for patient safety.

   It would thus be advantageous to provide an infusion pump alarm management system and method in which a display and control would assist users in intuitively and efficiently perceiving and understanding pump alarm information, and in acting upon and subsequently clearing pump alarms. Patient safety would ultimately be enhanced thereby.
