Method and System for Network Attached Storage Management through Data Related Objects

Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a system used for storage and management of data created and accessed by a user. The data created and accessed by the user can include, but need not be limited to, one or more data related objects and one or more system management objects. The data related objects can include, but need not be limited to, shares, users, quota, snapshots, storage capacity per system, directories and files. The system management objects can include, but need not be limited to, file systems, volumes and sub-volumes. When the user performs one or more file system management operations, the user is exposed to both the data related objects and the system management objects. The file system management operations can be, but need not be limited to, taking a snapshot, defining a quota, taking backup and mirroring.

Disclosed is a method and system for managing the NAS by exposing only one or more data related objects to a user when performing one or more file system management operations.

In order to expose only the one or more data related objects to the user, the method and system allows the user to perform the one or more file system management operations directly on the one or more data related objects and automatically creates the one or more system management objects corresponding to the one or more file system management operations.
