This invention is to disclose a new user input method on a touch screen and a system which interprets this user input method. With this method, when the user has the intention to select several items in the screen , s/he can draw a closed shape around the items. After this operation, all the items inside the closed shape shall be selected . User can remove some items from the selected items by draw a line across them.

This invention is to disclose a new user input method on a touch screen and a system which interprets this user input method. With this method, when the user has the intention to select several items in the screen, s/he can draw a closed shape around the items. After this operation, all the items inside the closed shape shall be selected. User can remove some items from the selected items by draw a line across them.

The touch screen will be the standard user interface for the next generation human machine input products, i.e. mobile phone, radio, computer or pad.
There will be many scenarios need to select or deselect multiple items in a list view operation, e.g. user would select several contacts to send out the text messages.
The traditional solution in smart device is to tick the items one by one, remove a selected item by tick again. Since the count of items in a single screen is usually exceed 10. It would be acceptable for smart device user in normal situation. However, for touch screen customer, this kind of operation is time consuming and error prone because the customer need find the checkbox and tick it finger by finger, companying scroll up or scroll down the screen to find the right ones at some time. User must concentrate on this operation avoid wrong choice.
There are ‘Select All’ menu in some applications. But the result selected item set is too big. The user has to scroll up or scroll down to find out if the items are really needed, deselect the ones if the user does not want it.
As the below Figure-2 and figure-3 shows, two operation patterns are defined. A closed shape area is interpreted as “Select” input gesture and a virgule (/) input on the screen as a “Deselect” input gesture. With the two operations defined, the user only needs to put his hand on the touch screen and do simple gesture to deal with batch actions. There is no need to choose finger by finger to select or deselect. These new operation gestures make user effective while s/he want to select or deselect the multiple choices.

Figure 2 and Figure 3 are the basic cases, in addition to the basic cases, user can draw several closed shape areas in a time sequence. All the selected items in the areas shall be merged. For example, user selects the first three contacts in figure 4.

The selected items are display specifically for user as figure 5, and user want to add more choices in the limited time, what s/he need to do is that drawing closed shape to choose the next three contacts, and these six contacts will be merge to one choice as displayed in Figure 6.
