Abstract

This invention describes an addition to touchscreen accessibility using heat to highlight relevant parts of the screen. Using heat transmitters built into the touchscreen, touch sensitive areas such as buttons change in temperature so that they can be recognised by touch. This would help visually impaired to navigate a touch interface when used in conjunction with other accessibility options such as a screen reader.

Tactile cue for visually impaired using touch screen technology

There are increasingly more situations where touch screen technology is the main option available for users. Some examples are mobile phone/tablet technology, airport check-in, self service tills.

    For the visually impaired this technology can present difficulties. With a flat screen there are no tactile cues as would be found with a keyboard and so it can be difficult to navigate and find the icons/buttons that are available on the screen

    Some of the alternatives currently available are audio feedback which provides an audio description of what the user is touching on the screen. This relies on the user receiving audio feedback to guide their finger across the screen, but

when exploring the screen to find buttons the visually impaired user can

inadvertently activate a button/icon.

On mobile phones icons move around as the user scrolls across the screen again making it difficult to use. Voice activation is provided for some kiosk touch screens, but this is not always reliable, especially in noisy locations such as airports

    This invention provides a tactile cue for the visually impaired using touch screens which gives the user an additional cue to existing audio cues so that they can more reliably find and activate the button/icon then require.

    The location of touch screen icons/buttons is identified by that area of the screen being hot or cold to touch.
