A driving recorder with a function of displaying an enlarged vehicle plate region

The driving recorder is a commonly used device for monitoring and recording the unpredictable events on the road (see Fig. 1). It can always provide important field evidences to judge the responsibilities of the traffic accidents.

Drivers always prefer to process a traffic accident as fast as possible, e.g. judging the responsibility of the accident in private, because it may take a very long period of time as well as much money to process (the accident) in a normal program involving the law enforcement agencies. A driving recorder therefore plays an irreplaceable role for a fair judgment of the traffic accident, not only in private but also in the normal program. In order to fast process the traffic accicdents, drivers and/or policemen commonly like to analyze the causes by directly replaying the captured video clips of the accident on the driving recorders. However, due to the limited size of the display screen (see Fig. 1), sometimes it is very difficult to clearly see the license numbers of surrounding vehicles, particularly in the night, leading to an undesired delay of process.

A new driving recorder is proposed to automatically pick out and enlarge the vehicle license plate regions of the surrounding vehicles from the video clip captured by a driving recorder when replaying (the video clip on the driving recorder), as is shown in above Fig. 2. Here we note that this function is only available in video replaying on the driving recording in practice, in order to save electric energy and reduce the cost of DSP hardware built-in the driving recorder (because the processing algorithm is run off-line when replaying).
