System and Method for Quickly Locate the Intended Window Amongst Multiple Opened Windows

     (1) Background: In a highly competitive business environment, people are required to do multi-tasking, meaning that users have to handle multiple tasks during the same period of time and switch among them. Thus, for a common business usage on a windows-based operation system (e.g. Windows 7), one may find he/she opened so many windows on the desktop after a period of time. (From author's personal experience, there are sometimes more than 50 windows opened). Now, if he/she wants to locate a specific window among all the opened windows, is there a quick and effective way to do so? Currently, there is not an easy and quick way to locate a specific window.

The invention provides a system and method to quickly locate the intended window among multiple opened windows.

(2) Known solutions:

Known solution 1: Microsoft Windows® provided "grouped" windows on task bar Drawback: It groups all opened windows for each "program". However, even for one application (e.g. Notes, Word), there could still be a lot of opened windows

Known solution 2: Desktop search(e.g. OS X: "Spotlight"; Windows: "Windows Search") Drawback: It is used to search existing files (documents, music, pictures, applications) in a computer, instead of the opened windows. (3) Key ideas: There are three key ideas of this invention:

      1. Centralized window locator in OS level - The idea is to utilize a Window Locating Manager in the Operating System level to perform the search work. It is built on the operating system level and has the privilege to interact with the window manager and get the metadata of a opened window. 2. Layered search hierarchy based on window locator API - A set of interfaces (APIs) is defined. Program which implements the interfaces can support the search of the content based on its specific knowledge of the content type. For example: - A video player may search using information in subtitles.

- A image/photo editor may search the image based on EXIF and IPTC information. It may also have the information of the embedded text in the image. - A mu...
